Why regular skin checks matter
Australia has the highest rate of melanoma in the world, and Cancer Council Australia estimates that at least 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. More than 1.1 million Medicare services are provided for non-melanoma skin cancers every year.
Queenslanders live with some of the strongest UV exposure in the country, and skin cancer can develop long after the sun damage that caused it. Found early, most skin cancers — including melanoma — can be treated successfully. That is why a regular professional skin check is worthwhile even if you have not noticed any changes.
What happens during a skin check
Your skin check is simple and non-invasive. During the appointment your doctor will:
- Examine your skin from head to toe, including easy-to-miss areas such as the scalp, ears, back and between the toes
- Use a dermatoscope to look closely at individual spots and moles
- Check any spots you are worried about and answer your questions
- Record or measure spots that should be monitored over time
- Clearly explain the next steps if anything needs closer attention
What if something is found?
Most spots turn out to be harmless. If a spot does need further attention, much of the follow-up can happen right here at the clinic — biopsies and many minor surgical procedures are performed on site, and Dr Sherif Abdalla has a special interest in skin cancers and minor surgery. Where specialist care is needed, we will organise a prompt referral.
When should you book a skin check?
See your doctor promptly about any spot that is new, changing in size, shape or colour, itching or bleeding, or a sore that does not heal. A routine skin check is especially worthwhile if you work outdoors, have fair skin, have a history of sunburn, have many moles, or have a personal or family history of skin cancer. Your doctor can advise how often you should be checked.
